Tough at the Top at McCrae Race Day 1
It wouldn't be a Tasar Nationals if there wasn't a general recall - only one today before 68 competitors got underway in Race 1 for the Unibilt Tasar Nationals. The breeze again shifted around the south-west at 10-15 knots. This did not phase Michael Quirk and Maurise Hannaford on Trouble AUS2770 who were never headed. NSW team mates Harley and Patricia Kruse sailed consistent legs to finish second. Frighteningly fast Victorians Paddy Oliver and Diane Nelson on Orange Lodge AUS2731 just crossed the line in front of Rob Douglass and Peter Isaacs of NSW on Coollit AUS2848. Sean Hackett and Phillipa Aravelo rounded out the top five.
Race 2 was a longer course that not only tested the physical fitness of competitors. Big shifts and a breeze increase to 14-17 knots saw mixed results at the top mark. Craig and Mel Davidson of ACT/NSW on their new boat Placebo Effect AUS2846 were blindingly fast on the first leg of the course, Derek and Gwen Warne on Oki Doki AUS2823 were hot on their tail. These two boats gapped the fleet having their own private battle up the front. The Warne's managed to take the gun from newcomers Mel and Craig in the final stretches to the finish. Third again was Paddy Oliver and Diane Nelson, who now lead the regatta after two heats. A slippery Sway AUS2847 sailed by Shane Guanaria and Mel Rippe finished fourth. Locals Mike Paynter and his wife Kim showed the visitors how it was done finishing fifth.
Today's results indeed show it is tough at the top.
Well done again to the Race Committee and volunteers for running such a tight ship in testing conditions.
